Below Symons General Store there’s a secret known only to those who venture down the stairs or through the door on the rear patio. If you choose to take this adventure, be prepared to be stunned; awed; astounded; for you have wandered into the Symons Wine Cellar.
From well recognized varieties and varietals to the boutique wines you may only read about in Wine Spectator, the selection is without match. You can spend less than ten dollars or more than two thousand, but the experience can be shared by all. Many who visit take pictures and soak in the extraordinary history of the oldest brick building in downtown Petoskey. Others simply wander and enjoy the ambiance.
The Symons Wine Cellar is the retail venue for Symons General Store, but also serves as the wine cellar for Chandler’s: A Restaurant. More importantly, often on a Sunday, we open a bottle or two and share with both store visitors and restaurant patrons. Perhaps one day the new zinfandel needs to breathe, and on another day, a new Sancerre arrival needs uncorking. If your palate parlays a desire for a full-bodied Bordeaux, there’s one for you. If it’s a summer Sauvignon Blanc or Chablis, the shelves are yours to peruse.
And did I mention the champagne? From Dom Perignon and Cristal to Laurent-Perrier, flutes are available if you are. Take a bottle to go or sit on the patio in the restaurant to savor our family favorite, Veuve Clicquot.
However you may choose to explore the Wine Cellar, make sure you take your time. Don’t be rushed. The wine ages well.
